Presentations from Columbia Sessions
I’ve just come back from a day of presentations at Columbia College in Chicago. In the afternoon I spoke in Patrick Lichty’s media theory class. Patrick had just begun to introduce MMO culture so I gave a little talk about identity construction in digital environments. Via communication mechanics is these digital spaces, we create versions of ourselves. I wanted the students to understand 1) how they create their online identity and 2) that these are real identities. I finished up by “proving” that Second Life if real.
See the PowerPoint here.
In the evening I gave a talk about education in Second Life to some faculty and community members.
That PowerPoint is here.
I also got to meet Bryan Campen (Cyrus Huffhines in SL)! He’s just as awesome in RL as he is in SL. Check out pics here.

I am from the magazine Psychology Today and we are interested in writing an article on Second Life and its players. I see that you have met with a lot of gamers and I was wondering if you could provide me their contact information for an interview. If you’d rather give them my information for them to contact me directly, my email is PTresearcher@hotmail.com. That would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Your power points are amazing! I’m doing some research on the potential of SL for a high school classroom, and I am a teacher consultant with the National Writing Project. Please continue to share the results so that we may all benefit!
How much time and no how go into the creation of a given learning environment? As with any discipline, time is of the essence.

Thanks for the great slide shows. You do a very good job of helping make your audience aware of the potential behind SL. I feel that it is an exciting time because it seems that we are very quickly moving into a new way of organizing and interacting with information. I am a teacher and I can only hope that this will all have a reinvigorating and even revolutionary effect on our understanding of what “education” is.

Sarah,
It was great meeting you, even though I wasn’t able to get to this event. Thanks for putting the power point online!

[…] Sarah Robbins’ recent presentation Digital Identity offers important clues. As she explains on slide 15 of her excellent PowerPoint, I was experiencing what James Paul Gee calls the Projective Identity - the “US” we put in a virtual character. My character, KJ Hax, my Projective Identity, was being threatened. Therefore I was being threatened - personally and experienced the anxiety - personally. […]

Hi Sarah,
First, thank you for these excellent presentations. They are so good I can only imagine the actual meetings were mesmerizing.
Second, your presentations (and discussion of Gee’s Three Identities) are helping me sort out a somewhat disturbing ‘altercation’ I had with an avatar on EduIsland recently. I’ve blogged about it here:

Anyway, as you will see in my posting at the very end, are you aware of anyone studying how emotional interactions in SL (positive or negative) impact people in RL?
Thanks,
Kevin Jarrett
